It's Christmas time and long-time listeners know that up until the mid 20th century, Christmas Eve was a traditional night for telling ghost stories! Tonight, host Eric Dwinnells will tell you a classic ghost story called Smee. Written by A.M.Burrage in 1931, it's the tale of a group of friends playing a variation of Hide & Seek in a large English manor where, 10 years before, a young woman had died. The trouble is...there seems to be an extra player in their game!

This makes the second year of Eric reading a ghost story at Christmas, and we certainly do hope you all have a dreadfully merry Christmas. And, if you don't celebrate, have a happy Monday!

Music played during this story was found on the internet and is listed as royalty free. It includes:
"Myth" by Isisip

"My Dark Passenger" by DesperateMeasurez

We all love seeing our favorite horror villains in their respective films on the big screen, but tonight host Eric Dwinnells tells us about a few times when some of our favorite horror icons appeared on random television shows. We've got Freddy Krueger on MTV, Chucky on WCW wrestling, The Joker on The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and Jason Voorhies giving Arsenio Hall the cold shoulder! This is some real must see TV right here!

Also on this episode: MTV was way better in the 80's, Robert Englund out of character, how WCW should have booked Chucky, is Batman's The Joker a horror villain?, why was Arsenio afraid to have Jason on the show and what did he do to make Kane Hodder laugh?

In 1975 a man named Travis Walton claimed to have been abducted by aliens and his story was the inspiration for the 1993 movie Fire in the Sky...but did it really happen? Tonight host Eric Dwinnells tells the story, often in Walton's own words, while guest co-host Brian Toney wrestles with the truthiness of it all.

We'll hear Walton's description of the various alien creatures he met including the orange-jumpsuited Greys and the good looking blue suited Swedes or Nordic Aliens. We'll hear about the "thing" he used to fight them off and what they did to him after. We'll also discuss wether this whole story was a hoax, a strange type of group hallucination, or the absolute truth!

Eric Dwinnells is back to do one of his favorite things: Expose the simple tricks used by psychics (or mediums, clairvoyants, channelers or whatever the hell else they might all themselves. Specifically, we're going to look at some Psychic Fails! What happens psychics get it dead wrong?

It sure is fun to look at their mistakes. Like the psychic who couldn't tell someone had died in 9/11, or the psychic who claimed a picture she was shown was a murdered child when it was actually a old picture of the person standing right in front of her. But that's not all we're going to do. We are going to look at their techniques including cold reading, hot reading, and fishing. Of course, it's possible Eric is wrong. Maybe these psychics really are getting their (often incorrect or incomplete) information from disembodied spirits...but one seems more like than the other.

Although these techniques could be used by any psychic act, tonight we're going to focus on Sylvia Browne, James Van Praagh, The Hollywood Medium Tyler Henry and The Long Island Medium, Theresa Caputo.  And we're not just talking about there supposed abilities; Eric will also review them based on their performance and presentation. Show folk adjudicating show folk!

Tonight Eric takes a good look at the strange goings on at Bohemian Grove. There is no question that the Bohemian Club and it's summer camp is a real thing...but what is it exactly? If you ask the club its self,  they would probably tell you it is a private club for distinguished gentlemen who like to blow off a little steep for two weeks in July away from the eyes of the press. But, if you ask conspiracy theorist like Alex Jones, he would be more likely to tell you the Bohemian Grove is a place where rich republicans world leaders meet to plot to control the world and practice strange occult rituals possibly including human sacrifice!

So which is true? Well, several people, including Mr. jones, have successfully infiltrated the camps at Bohemian Grove and tonight we'll dig through a few of them to try and separate fact from fiction. We'll also take a look at the infamous Cremation of Care ceremony that Jones caught on film and try to determine if its footage of an actual human sacrifice or more like a poorly produced Disneyland stage show.

We'll also discuss rumors of wild orgies, non-stop drinking, secret meetings, and the music Bohemian's listen to. We'll also discuss who makes up the membership of the bohemian club and how much membership costs, what two former presidents had to say about it, if Alex Jones qualifies as a garbage person, and Eric will give some suggestions on how The Bohemian Club could improve the festivities through better production!

Eric wonders if he'd qualify as "a man of talent"?

Eric Dwinnells welcomes back Fatima Elmi to discuss a cult classic film that she'd only recently seen for the first time, 1984's Children of the Corn. This movie was based on a short story by Stephen King and tonight we'll discuss the difference between the two but mostly we'll be focused on the movie. Naturally, Eric and Fatima will walk you trough the plot adding their own observations and answer these boring questions:

Can close-ups of hands holding farming equipment CAN be scary?

What makes Issac (played by John Franklin) so unusual looking?

Why was Eric unimpressed with Linda Hamilton's dance moves?

How does Malachi manage such a busy day?

Speaking of Malachi, how did Courtney Gains not win an Oscar for his amazing performance in this film? And also...what's up with his teeth?

Why is Burt such a jerk?

Which member of the cast appeared in Monster Squad and which one appeared in both Full House and Fuller House?

All this and more will be answered on this episode of Spooky A S!

Tonight host Eric Dwinnells reports on his Halloween season including visits to Spooky World, Salem, Lyndhurst castle, The Chiller Theatre convention and the real Sleepy Hollow!

More importantly, Eric, The Witchfinder General of Salem, MA will read for you a book written by the all-too-real Matthew Hopkins, the historic Witchfinder General of England! In 1647, Matthew Hopkins wrote a book of sorts to answer some accusations that his witch examinations were nothing but torture sessions designed to fleece the towns he visited out of their money. Eric has updated the text to make it more palatable to modern ears, but don't worry. You'll still get a good feel for just how evil this so-clled Witchfinder was!

Eric Dwinnells finally welcomes back guest co-host Brian Toney to talk about when Halloween Decorations become too real! We'll start with a discussion about how people decorated their yards for Halloween in the 80's and how modern Halloween displays often come under fire for being too graphic. Where does Eric stand on the issue? The answer may surprise you.

We'll move on to talk about incidents where real-life corpses were mistaken for Halloween decorations, Halloween pranks that turned into accidental suicides, and the intriguing case of Elmer McCurdy, the old west outlaw who ended up as a neon-painted corpse in a funhouse.

We'll discuss Linda Godfrey who named the unknown creature and wrote a book about it based on many eyewitness accounts. We'll also learn what local law enforcement has to say about the beast and how it's sudden fame in the early 1990's affected the community.

We'll also try to discover just what people could really be seeing on Bray Road and how both Will Smith and Mick Fleetwood are tied to the story. Plus Eric will tell of his own recent encounter with a mystery creature on a dark country road.

Tonight's episode is not for the especially sensitive. It deals with some very intense subject matter and NOT in the normal way. Listener discretion is advised.

This week Eric takes on one of the most taboo subject of all time: Necrophilia. Necrophilia is the sexual attraction to human corpses and, happily, cases of nercophiliacs acting on their impulses are fairly rare...but the attraction its self may be far more common than society is willing to admit.

Tonight we'll go over the case of Francois Bertrand, the 19th century necrophiliac who was captured after exhuming multiple corpses and having his way with them. But why did he do it? And how? But mostly WHY?!?!

We'll also discuss some suspected causes and possible therapeutic treatments which may help those with these compulsions.

It's a nasty, morbid and taboo subject, but hey, they can't all be about Punky Brewster!!!

Sep 24, 2017

Eric Dwinnells is back to deliver a tribute the pioneering artist, Basil Gogos who created numerous iconic images of some of the sliver screen's most legendary monsters and boogeymen. Many of these images were used to grace the covers of Famous Monsters of Flimland magazine, but he also did artwork for numerous other magazines, western novels, movie posters, and rock album covers including Rob Zombie, The Misfits, and Electric Frankenstein.

Unfortunately, Gogos passed away earlier this month, but on this episode we'll celebrate his life's work and find out why he chose to use so much color in a genre that normally sticks to black, white and grey...with a little red occasionally thrown in. We'll also discover what he considered to be the secret that made his art so impactful and find out what advice he has for aspiring artists.

Also discussed on this episode: Why Eric likes having guests, Salem, MA, Kirk Hammet (of Metallicia) and his love for Basil Gogos as well as his It's Alive horror art exhibit at The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM), Bobby the Brain Heenan, Chiller Theatre, and more!

After battling another summer cold, Eric Dwinnells is back to tell you all about his trip to Salem, NH to visit Mystery Hill aka America's Stonehenge!

The owners of the site would have you believe the caves (well..at least the foundations of them) date back as far as 4,000 years ago. Although they admit that they could have been built by Native Americans, they seem to really want you to believe a yet unknown race of Europeans set up shop in this remote forest in NH THOUSANDS of years before Columbus sailed the ocean blue. But what evidence do they have to support this claim?

There's no doubt it's an interesting spot...but what exactly are the mysteries of Mystery Hill? Is it history or just a hoax?

Also discussed tonight: A possible ghost sighting at George Washington's home (Mount Vernon in Virginia), the sacrificial table and your bedroom, and the underground railroad.

Dipping into the vaults, host Eric Dwinnells presents you with an episode recorded over a year ago! His guest? Tristyn Sepersky. The subject: A very 80's Halloween with Kate & Allie!

Eric held this episode back because he was afraid the subject would only appeal to a select handful of listeners, but encouraged by the success of the recent Punky Brewster episode, he's decided to finally release this "lost episode". And he's happy to do so...he's been watching the Halloween episode of Kate and Allie for 31 years straight! And it's a good one too: It's got 80'd halloween decorations, 80's Halloween masks and costumes, pranks, a ghost, poltergeist activity, messages on mirrors, a seance, the beautiful Ari Meyers, and much more!

Also on this episode: Eric's 1986 Halloween tape, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is The Simpsons a sitcom?, Suicide Squad, Friends, My So Called Life, and "very special episodes".

Eric Dwinnells and guest co-host Kristen Mystery are back with another listener request: Black Eyed Children!

Eric was hesitant to cover the topic as a stand alone episode because he didn't feel there was much to it. After all, they are an internet invention...just another creepypasta not based on any true events...right?

Join Eric and Kristin as they direct the motives and meanings behind the story that brought Black Eyed Children (aka BEC's) into the internet mythos. They will discuss stories about the black eyed children and pay special attention to the tale told by paranormal enthusiast Brian Bethel about his 1996 encounter.

Also discussed on thus episode: bumps in the night, the trend of violent bigfoot stories lately, and the convenience of live streaming paranormal encounters.

Host Eric Dwinnells and guest co-host Emily Ferguson sit down and watch Halloween: Trick or Treat from the 13 part video series, The Pagan Invasion. This anti-halloween video was produced by a very conservative christian sect and contains A LOT of things you should know.

Did you know that on Halloween night, all over the world, children are sacrificed to Satan? Or that 80% of 9 year-olds have expressed a desire to murder someone on Halloween? Or that witches use their brooms for "self gratification"?Or that when you trick or treat, you do it for the devil?

All this plus some modern fundamentalist takes on Halloween will be discussed. Other topics covered include:gender roles when choosing halloween costumes, human sacrifice, satanism, wicca, druids, blood drinking, porno, horror films, the pumpkin racket, and teenage sex/drug parties.

They'll discuss different theories and some famous cases. Most importantly they'll ask the big question: is it real?

Discussed on this episode:
the wick effect, alcoholism, fire eating, self immolation and the burning monk, the danger of holding in your farts, Mary Reeser, Michael Flaherty and so much more! Well, a little more anyway.

Assuming Elvis Presley really did die 40 years ago this month, where is The Ghost of Elvis Presley? Host Eric Dwinnells welcomes guest co-host Jen Leland (aka Jen Hen) to discuss spots reportedly haunted by Elvis and a few "true" ghost stories about peoples' encounters with "The King". Even Vegas icon Wayne Newton claims to have had a run in with him!

Where is the best place to find Elvis' ghost at Graceland? What Vegas show room claims regular visits by the phantom King? Which famous Hollywood hotel is said to be the spirit's favorite stomping ground? And which TV studio in Nashville may play home to Elvis' lost soul? All these questions and more will be answered?

Also discussed: why ghosts haunt certain places, theories about a single ghost haunting multiple places, Harry Potter vs The Worst Witch, and a nice story about Pricilla Presley taking some time to do something kind for your host.

DON'T SKIP THIS EPISODE! I know it's not about ghosts or vampires, but hear us out:
Tonight host Eric Dwinnells has invited his nearly life-long friend Jennie Lecesse (aka Blades) over to discuss a childhood trauma that nobody seems to talk about or even remember: The Nightmare World of Punky Brewster!

If you're a child of the 80's, there is a good chance you have fond memories of the precocious little rainbow girl in pigtails known as Punky Brewster...but hold on. How much do you really remember about the show? There was A LOT of creepy stuff going on in several episodes. Sure, you remember when Punky and her friends made their own workout video, or when her foster father, Henry, took her to see The Cubs play, and you may even remember the infamous episode where Punky's friend Cherie got stuck inside a refrigerator. But it got WAY more serious than that.

What about the one where Punky has to fight a demon in a cave? Or the one about a serial killer? Those are the ones we'll be focusing on tonight and warning: it may bring up childhood trauma you've blocked out all these years.

We'll also discuss what REALLY happened to Punky's mom. They say she simply abandoned Punky....but we think she was murdered and we even name a suspect tonight on Spooky A S!

Host Eric Dwinnells was out of town and didn't think he'd have time to put together an episode this week, but then he remembered one he had in the vaults: Cult Brainwashing with Tom Cole!

WARNING:There is an issue with the audio on this one. You'll hear a crackling noise, but hopefully after the first minute or so, your brain will adjust and it will become white noise to you.

In this episode, Eric and Tom discuss how cults generally recruit new members and how they "brainwash" them to make sure they stay in the cult. We'll also discuss the fine line between a religion and a cult as well as which groups/religions are often accused of being cults and why.

Eric Dwinnells is talking to ghosts! Well, not directly. He has to speak out loud into a microphone and record himself then keep the recorder going for a while waiting for a response. Oh, he won't hear the response at first because ghosts usually speak through infrasound, but when he plays the recording back and "enhances" the audio, he just might hear the voice of a spirit! Paranormal investigators call this Electronic Voice Phenomena or EVP for short.

Tonight Eric will give you a brief history of EVP in America and the people who support it including Sarah Estep, Raymond Bayless, The Ghost Hunters, the Ghost Adventures, and many other modern paranormal investigation groups. He'll also play actual EVP recordings and invite you to interpret what the ghosts are saying. He even went so far as to record EVP's in his apartment! You'll want to hear the results for yourself!

But are we really hearing the voices of the dead, or is it just a form of audio pareidolia? Is our brain forcing us to turn random noises caused by static or radio interference into messages from the great beyond?

Find out tonight on Spooky A S!

Host Eric Dwinnells is keeping a promise he made all the way back in episode 10; to continue talking about American Vampires. But, as he warns guest co-host Fatima Elmi, this is not a story for the faint of heart. Yes, this story is particularly depraved and gruesome, so listener discretion is advised. Tonight we'll be discussing the Sacramento Vampire, Richard Chase.

Chase was a clearly disturbed young man who lived under the delusion that a nazi crime syndicate was paying his mother to poison his blood. The only way he could same himself, according to Chase, was to imbibe the blood of others. But that's not even the worst of his crimes.

In 1978, Richard Chase was charged with a series of grisly murders and other unspeakable acts but the real question was, due to his mental condition, should he be held fully responsible for his crimes or had his parents, schools, and the mental health system failed him so badly that they should share in some of the blame?

Host Eric Dwinnells is back to finish telling you about The Curse of the Pharaohs! The idea is that those who enter a pharaoh's tomb are cursed and often die of mysterious causes...but is there any truth to it? Tonight, he'll separate fact from fiction and explain some of the odd things that really did occur around the opening of King Tut's tomb and pointing out half truths and outright lies that grew around the story.

Loyal listeners will probably guess that Eric doesn't put much stock in the idea of a mummy actually getting up and murdering people like in the movies. But does that mean there is no truth to ancient Egyptian curses? What about the idea bacteria on mummies and/or growing on tomb walls can lead to death (thus creating a roundabout curse)? As recently as the 1990's there has been a death attributed to just such a "curse".

We'll here what the medical establishment, Lord Carnarvon's relatives, and noted skeptic Jams Randi have to say regarding all this and more on tonight's Spooky A S!

Ok, we know...it's a short one. But work with us here! Your host, Eric Dwinnells has about 10 minutes of free time per day thanks to work stuff/theater stuff so he's giving you what he can. Tonight, we begin an in-depth two part look into the Curse of The Pharaohs! Apparently, ancient kings/gods on earth do NOT like to be woken up, but is there any grain of truth to the idea that ancient Egyptian tombs may be cursed?

Tonight we'll focus mostly on the many deaths and strange events said to be connected with the discovery of the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun aka King Tut, the boy king. What happened when Howard Carter opened discovered the door to the tomb? What could have caused the death of Lord Carnarvon or his daughter's stroke? Why did the Egyptian Director of Antiquities think it was a terrible mistake to allow King Tut's treasures to leave Egypt? And what horrors will Tom Cruise release in 2017's The Mummy (the first entry in Universals "Dark Universe")

All this and more will be discussed on tonight's Spooky A S!
