Tonight we look at one of the most famous ghost stories of Massachusetts, The Legend of Lucy Keyes and the Ghosts of Mount Wachusett!

In the spring of 1755, four-year-old Lucy Keyes went missing from her semi rural home in Princeton, MA. Professionals poured in to help search for Lucy, but eventually all hope was lost and most stopped searching for the girl. Only her mother held out any hope. Most believed a tribe of Native Americans had kidnapped or murdered the girl. Still others believed her quarrelsome neighbor, Tilly Littlejohn, may have known much more than he let on.

Some say Lucy never really disappeared. In fact, if you visit Mount Wachusett today, some believe there is a chance you just might run in to the ghost of little Lucy or her mother who roams the trails of the mountain still searching for her daughter.

Eric is still sick, but don't be afraid because while he recovers his voice, True-Blue Spookaroo and once-and-future guest Jeff Bergeron has stepped up and tried his hand at recording a ghost story for us! This was completely unsolicited but entirely welcome and very thoughtful. So big thanks to Jeff!

Tonight he tells us The Legend of Peggy's Cove...and the ghost said to haunt it! It's a quick story; just a little something to help tide you over until a new full episode is released.

Don't forget YOU can submit your own hometown haunts (ghost/paranormal/true-crime stories set somewhere near you) by reaching out to Eric via Facebook, Instagram or email!

You asked for it, and Eric delivers! We're diving into some little local legends that may not have enough information to create an entire episode based on, but when combined together the form Myths of Massachusetts Vol. 1!

We begin in Westford, MA, where some strange clues about the founding of America may lay written in stone. The town is home to what has become known as The Westford Knight: a supposed figure of a Scottish Knight holding his shield and sword carved into a slab of stone. Is it possible that a clan of Knights Templar fled Europe in the 14th century to make a new home in Westford? People have been disagreeing over what the design is and who could have created it since at least the late 19th century. If you visit the knight today, you'll see it has been given a very grand viewing area complete with a probably untrue history presented as complete fact!

Next stop, the scariest road in Billerica, MA: the haunted Dudley Road! Why should this semi-rural, forested road be considered so scary? According to the legends, there is an old abandoned insane asylum just off the road. Some say tortured should still linger and possibly seek revenge! Or maybe it has to do with the old abandoned convent. Stories about that place vary, but most involve a combination of nuns and witches...or witch-nuns!

In a surprise return to the show, Eric welcomes back Fatima Elmi to talk about the world's most famous ghost ship, The Mary Celeste! Fatima was slightly disappointed when she realized tonight's story did not contain any actual ghost, but it is a great mystery none the less!

In 1872, The Mary Celeste was found drifting in the middle of the Atlantic with her sails half set. She had left new York several days earlier with 10 people on board...but now the credit was missing. There was no sign of a struggle and no note left behind. There was no serious damage done to the ship. It's as if the crew and passengers had just vanished into thin air. So what happened? That's what we'll try to figure out on tonight's episode!

Eric welcomes guest cohosts Olivia and Mackenzie, hosts of the true crime podcast Death By Champagne! Tonight Eric, Liv and Mack will cover the case of The Smiling Widow, Jessie Costello.

Jessie was accused of poisoning her husband in 1933. Her trail received little fanfare...until the press started to focus on Jessie's looks. Suddenly, she was transformed into a bewitching enchantress who was able to capture the heart of any man she wished...including the jury at her trial! Jessie became infamous and she loved the spotlight being cast upon her. She posed for picture in her cell and even received flowers from her jailers.

Tonight we take a break from historic murders and get slightly silly as Eric offers up some Spooky Commercials. Sure, you'd expect to see something scary if you were watching Tales from the Darkside...but what about Full House? Surely nothing could scar you for life during an episode of one of the most saccharin shows in TV history, right?

These commercials could pop up and terrify you when you least expected. Like the one where a monster, most likely Freddy Kruger, demands you call his 900 number to chat. Or the bizarre Japanese commercial where a beautiful woman introduces a monster baby to Kleenex. How about The Smurfs getting bombed? Death watching over a local pond waiting to kill children? Vincent Price hawking books full of arcane knowledge? It's all here. Plus the PSA where McGruff the crime Dog convinced Eric that he was mere moments away from being kidnaped and never seen again!

When you think of a thug, chances are good you imagine an Indian man wearing a yellow scarf, but that's exactly what the term originally described! The Thugs were bands of roving bandits/murders who may have been practicing ritual sacrifice to appease a bloodthirsty goddess in a way of life they called thuggee...or they may never have existed at all.

We'll try to separate fact from fiction and you'll get an update on Hannah Duston and Salad Fingers on this week's Spooky A S!

Tonight, Eric is joined by special guest Charles Gustine, host of the podcast Iconogrophy. When these two let met, Eric was a guest on Charles' podcast to discuss witchfinding and modern Salem. Tonight Charles returns the favor as the two discuss Hannah Duston: A Mother's Revenge!

Hannah Duston was a puritan woman living in Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1697 when she, her servant and her infant daughter were taken captive by Native Americans. The Natives were involved in a war against the English at the time, and they told Hannah their plan was to torture the captives and then ransom them back to their families. Hannah didn't like the sound of this, but when one of the natives killed her infant daughter, Hannah began plotting not only an escape, but very possibly a shocking act of revenge.

Eric and Charles will discuss the complicated legacy of Hannah Duston's story, what to do with monuments erected to celebrate people/events we're not so sure we should be celebrating anymore, the over simplification of Native American history, the Matter Family, and Tarantino films on tonight's episode!

Thanks to busted equipment and St. Patrick's day being just around the corner, we're dipping into the archives to re-present you an early episode about Leprechauns and Banshees! Actually, we cover a lot of Irish mythology and this episode deserves more downloads than it got the first time around.

Eric and guest Tom Cole will also discuss words they have trouble saying and, as a new added bonus, Eric will tell you about the time he met Warwick Davis, The Leprechaun himself!

Tonight Eric welcomes Back Lilith Beest (aka Lil' Beesty) to talk about Halloween 2018 (the movie, not the holiday). Eric and Lil are both huge fans of Halloween 1978, but will they share the same passion for the latest entry?

Spoiler: No, they will not. One will love it, one will tolerate it. They'll also give their thoughts on Jamie Lee Curtis, the motivations of Michael Myers and the sad state of the mental health profession as represented by all Halloween movies.

Tonight we discuss the intriguing and heartbreaking case of Mr. Cruel, Australia's most infamous child murderer. The masked stranger crept into family homes at night, tied up the parents and disappeared into the night carrying a child under his arm. In two incidents, he let the children go after holding them captive and filming himself carrying out his perverse fantasies with them. But in his last known crime, he crossed the line from kidnapper to murderer.

Now, nearly 30 years after his last known offense, investigators are ramping up their efforts to finally unmask Mr. Cruel. This case is often compared to America's Golden State Killer and some have even speculated that Mr. Cruel and Golden State are one and the same. We'll attempt to separate fact from fiction on tonight's Spooky A S.

Tonight Eric welcomes back returning guest host Emily Ferguson to talk about the horror-themed video games Chiller and Night Trap!

We begin with Chiller, a 1988 arcade game which is still surprisingly gory and violent even by today's standards...and that's really saying something! The point of the game is to shoot a gun at helpless torture victims trapped (and naked) in a haunted house! What?!?!

Then we move on to the 1987/1992 classic, Night Trap! This full motion video game let's you choose your own adventure (kind of) as you control security cameras in a house where teens are being murdered by mysterious creatures known as Augers and a clan of vampires! It's campy 80's fun and in 2017, the game was made available for ps4 in a special 25th anniversary addition so let's play!

Plus Eric and Emily discuss the sexy and dangerous allure of arcades in the 1980's, New Hampshire's own Fun Spot, creepy men who like to hide in bushes, boobs AND butts, 80's hair, and the often overlooked terror of minimalist set dressing! And yell at our speakers as Eric and Emily try to remember the names of two pretty famous people!

Tonight Eric takes a trip into the bayou as he tells us about The Haunting of Manchac Swamp! This Louisiana swamp is not only haunted by the vengeful spirit of a long dead voodoo priestess, it's also said to be the hunting grounds of the rougarou or cajan werewolf!

Julia Brown was a local faith healer known for her healing abilities and her powers of prophesy. But her seemingly unearthly knowledge caused her neighbors to fear her. Soon, they had convinced themselves that she was a voodoo priestess in league with dark forces. Soon enough, Julia began to predict that on the day she died, the whole town would suffer...and she was right!

The rougarou is a werewolf-like creature said to be native to this area of the world. It especially enjoys the case of naught children and lapsed Catholics. It is very similar to a werewolf, though there are some key differences in how the cures is placed and how it can be removed.

All this PLUS an important update about Eric's hometown haunt, John Stones Inn (aka Stone's Public House).

The men of the farm grabbed their guns and shot at these creatures for almost four hours. Once the shooting was done, the entire clan drove to the police station to report the attach. When police came to investigate, questions about just what had really happened at the Sutton farm only deepened. Join as as we try to separate fact from fiction in this astonishing unsolved mystery.

Sure we've all heard of them before...but was exactly are they and what are the differences between them? Tonight you'll learn which one will steal your baby, which will bust your laptop, and which one will sweep your floors!

Plus Eric discusses dramatic gremlin related memories and reveals why he holds grudges against his siblings as he reveals no less than three family secrets.

Eric welcomes back Spookaroo Jeffery Bergeron to talk about a topic Jeffery suggested: The Blood Lible of Andrel von Rinn. Three-year-old Adndel was found murdered in the forest and some believed it was part of an ancient blood ritual...but could any of it be true? Researching this episode led Eric to learn the term blood libel which, if you've never heard of it either, you'll be shocked to learn its horrible, hurtful history.

It's a history of fear mongering and propaganda of the worst caliber...and, as historian Jeffery points out, all too timely.

Big cats such as cougars haven't been known to exists in New England for over 150 years yet each year new sightings of strange cougar-like animals are reported to local wildlife authorities. These authorities say almost all reports of mountain lions in New England are simply a case of mistaken identity and that mountain lions no longer exist on the east coast of the United States...and yet they have confirmed at least two mountain lion sightings in the same area more than 10 years apart!

Join Eric as he dives into the mystery of the Eastern Big Cats! Plus, stay tuned at the end of the show for a special announcement about how YOU can become a part of the show!

This case gets stranger and stranger as we go along and lean the truth about Artemus Ogletree...IF that was his real name...and in this case we're honestly not sure!

It's that time of year again! Time to gather 'round that chimney where the stockings are hung with so much care...and tell ghost stories!

In England, Christmas Eve was considered the prime night for telling ghost stories and we see no reason why that tradition should have fallen by the wayside; so we're bringing it back! Tonight Eric reads Charles Dickens' The Signalman. It concerns a signalman working at a lonely remote train station who is haunted by a strange faceless apparition that sees to be a harbinger of doom! Will he discover the phantom's meaning in time to prevent the next horror? Tune in tonight and find out for yourself!

Nov 30, 2018

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the release of The Beatles (White Album). Aside from all the great music on the album, it reminds all true crime fiends of The White Album's connection to Charles Manson and The Manson Family Murders.

In the late 60's, cult leader Charles Manson told his followers that a race war was coming and The Family would have to hide in a secret underground city. Then, when the war was over, The Family would return to the surface and rule the world. But what proof did Charlie have of this prophecy? He cited two main sources: The Bible and The Beatles!

Tonight Eric will break down the messages Manson allegedly took from both sources and explain how they tied into The Manson Family's plan to commit murder and start the war that Manson called "Helter Skelter".

We'll also hear from Charles Manson himself and we'll hear what Beatle John Lennon has to say about Manson and hidden messages in Beatles music.

How much would you pay for Ted Bundy's glasses or a lock of Charles Manson's hair? Eric is once again joined by true-blue Spookaroo Susan Barrett to discuss the buying, selling, and collecting of Murderabilia. It's become something of a growing trend with multiple websites devoted to selling just about anything related to serial killers including their artwork, their prison visitors sheets, and even their hair. Some consider murderabilia part of history; others consider it an exploration of tragedy and the sickest kind of "celebrity obsession". But where do you stand?

We'll also talk about Son of Sam laws and how both their absence and their enforcement can have negative effects on society.

Halloween season is over and your host is falling apart! To give Eric a bit of a rest, we're diving into the archives to reissue episode 3, Ghosts of John Stone's Inn (aka Stone's Public House). Eric has recorded a new intro and outdo with additional commentary and remixed the sound of the original episode so it should sound even better than it did the first time around. Plus this episode is special: it's the first appearance of Jenny "Blades" Lecesse!

Eric and Jennie discuss their hometown haunt: John Stone's Inn as it used to be known or Stone's Public House as it is currently known. Legend has it that a murder took place in the basement and was covered up by townies. Now the murderous spirits are said to haunt the halls of the bar/restaurant...and so does the ghost of their victim! And they aren't alone. Another legend tells of a little girl who was hit by a train just outside of the inn who now roams the upper floors and likes to peer out the windows. It's also said the bloody dress they removed from her body as they attempted to save her life can still be found in the restaurant...if it's not out for framing!

We know it's kind of lame to repost an old episode, but it will be new to many of you and we hope you will enjoy the new content.

Happy Halloween, Spookaroos!!! Eric rushed this episode to be sure to have it ready for you in time for Halloween so please forgive any little mistakes that may have been left in. Yes, host Eric Dwinnells is back to tell you about all the things he did to make the most of this year's Halloween season including a visit to The Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast, Gallows Hill Theater, and The Rebecca Nurse Homestead. He'll also tell you his thoughts on the new Halloween film. Don't worry: no spoilers.

But also on this episode, Eric dives into the history of the infamous Ben Cooper Halloween Costume Company. If you're over 30, chances are pretty good that you owned at least one Ben Cooper costume in your childhood. They were those cheep boxed costumes that came with those thin plastic masks and (usually) plastic smocks with the licensed character's name on them. And what licensee they had! Pretty much every major movie, cartoon or TV was represented with a Ben Cooper costume of varying artistic quality and accuracy.

Tonight Eric ponders the past and possible future of the iconic Ben Cooper costumes and tells you about a recent interview he did with the Iconography podcast.

Last week's episode got a little heavy so this week let's get real dumb! Tonight we celebrate Beavis and Butt-Head in general and Cornholio Lord of the Harvest specifically!

It may or may not surprise you to learn that Eric was a big Beavis and Butt-Head fan during the show's original run so naturally he was tuned in when they aired there one and only Halloween special on Halloween night in 1995. Sure it's crude and dumb but it's also funny as hell...if you have the right sense of humor! Are you fartknockers brave enough to face the wrath of the Almighty Bunghole?
